Another success story for a senior dog!

We adopted Wendy about two years ago when she was 14, and I thought you would like to see that our girl is still very healthy and going strong. She loves her new home with her sisters Brownie and Angel, and is still able to play with them out in the backyard. Thank you for allowing us to take our three girls home!

Stretch and Scratch for the cats!

All cats love to scratch, but for cats in shelters, scratching is especially beneficial as it allows a cat to stretch their muscles and alleviates some of the stress and boredom that may be experienced while caged.

For a $5 donation, you can provide one of our shelter cats with a Stretch and Scratch pad to keep them exercised and entertained. Once a cat is adopted, they will be able to take their scratch pad home with them as well!

Donations may be made in person, or mailed to the shelter. If you have a particular cat that you would like to donate a pad too, please let us know!

Good Advice for Dealing with Coyotes

Brockton Dog Attacked by Coyote

BROCKTON —

Officials are warning city residents to be on the lookout for coyotes.

On Monday a female Golden Retriever was attacked by two coyotes in her yard on the west side of the city, according to the Board of Health.

It is pup season for coyotes, officials said, and parents are protective of their young and will defend them if they feel threatened.

The Board of Health offers the following information to help prevent encounters with coyotes:

Coyotes are not nocturnal. They are opportunistic and will come out for food when they are hungry.

Coyotes are carnivorous and will eat the easiest meal available. Cover and secure all trash and compost. Trash is a quick and easy meal that they will come back for.

Do not feed animals outside. Cat food makes a great source of food for coyotes, as do the cats that the food is meant for.

Pick up any dropped fruit or vegetables from your gardens and/or trees.

If you come across a coyote do not run. Make yourself look as big as possible while yelling and making as much noise as you can until the coyote leaves.

If a coyote is frequenting your yard, keep your garden hose handy. Coyotes do not like being sprayed by the hose.

Paws for Celebration a Success!

On March 17^th, we held our 3^rd annual Paws for Celebration – and if you had the opportunity to be there, you know what a great time it was and also a celebration of community spirit. Nearly 300 people joined in the fun and local businesses like Brockton Animal Hospital, The Shaw’s Center, The Wine Guys, Notch Brewing, Barefoot Wines and Sure Shots gave their sponsorship. Many other businesses and friends donated goods to be auctioned, and attendees generously helped us raise over $25,000 that will not only allow the APCSM to help animals find homes, but continue programs that help people keep their pets as well. Also, during a special 10 minute collection, attendees donated to the APCSM’s Life is Precious Fund to help cover the medical costs incurred for the 4 cats rescued from the February house fire on Brockton’s East Side – this special collection, with matching funds from two anonymous supporters, raised more than $3500.

On behalf of the entire APCSM staff, volunteers and the many homeless pets in our care – a big thank you to the dozens of business that supported us, to our sponsors and especially those that attended for making this year’s Paws for Celebration such a success! You all showed us that a community coming together is the most important bottom line. We look forward to doing it again in 2013 and continuing to serve the community for many years to come.

Rescued Cats Update – Pheonix finds a new home!

We are happy to report, that Pheonix, one of the four cats rescued from the house fire in Brockton last Tuesday, has found her new forever home. Congratulations to her and her new family!

Ashton continues to recover here at the shelter. His bandages came off Tuesday and while he still has a ways to go before he is completely healed, he is now available for adoption. He is a sweetheart of a cat and just loves to patted and cuddled.

Cinder is also still here awaiting her new family to find her. While she is a little quieter than her friends, she is a love!

Ember (formerly Smores) was released from the animal hospital on Tuesday and is resting comfortably in a foster home. While she has made great strides, the healing process will be a long one and medical costs continue to climb.

Please help us continue to provide care for Ember and Ashton by donating to our Life is Precious Fund!

Cats rescued from house fire need your help!!

The APCSM is currently helping four cats that were rescued from a house fire Tuesday morning by Brockton firefighters and Brockton Animal Control.

Two of the cats, Pheonix and Cinders were treated at New England Animal Medical Center. Both have been released and are ready to be adopted.
Ashton, the 3rd cat, has a fairly severe burn on his foot and still needs medical care and is recovering at the shelter.
The fourth cat, Smores, named so because he was so badly burned, remains at the vet hospital with severe burns on all four of his feet. His prognosis is very good and the staff at the hospital reports that he is super sweet (as are other 3) and just wants to be patted.
Medical costs are quickly adding up, however, and we are asking the public for help so that we can continue to provide care for these poor kitties who have been through so much. Donations can be made to our Life is Precious Fund by stopping by the shelter or mailing a check to APCSM, 1300 West Elm St Ext, Brockton MA 02301. You may also make a donation through our website.

APCSM Success Story- Patches

We were thrilled when Patches was adopted! Here’s what her new person says:

Just to let you know Patches is doing well. She loves going for a walk and cuddling on the couch after work. So glad I adopted an older dog because she is adjusting well to my routine and is great company. I’ve included a couple of photos of her relaxing. Thanks for helping her out.

Dec. 16th we adopted Dorito…now going by Stanley. He is the cutest little kitty and has made himself right at home. His favorite place to sleep is on a small table with the Christmas decorations. He has a little cold but is taking his medicine like a trouper! Thank you for all you do!!!
